Can Vbulletin achieve W3C Priority AAA standards??

Can Vbulletin achieve W3C Priority AAA standards if appropriately skinned?

How much work is necessary on the templates to do this?

Since you can change 100% of the templates and language phrases, I would have to say that yes it can.

Part of the reason for my question is that it uses tables to lay the page out. Surely layout should be achieved by the use of CSS, reserving tables for the presentation of data?

The reason for asking is that we have been asked to build a AAA website that includes a forum, and I would far rather implement Vbulletin than try and build something from scratch.

You could use CSS for layout. The choice of a full table layout for vBulletin was because of market share. We have over 50,000 customers and over 100,000 licenses sold.

tables represent tabular data. things like the forum listings page, that show all fora, subfora, posts in specific forums, post dates, etc are all tabular data. so it's not as clear cut.

The answer to the AAA Question; yes theoretically (assuming you change the mark-up, client-side script, etc.) OR until someone else actually posts. Ah, no forum can claim AAA unless each post is individually vetted.
