if a div has a background image, can that image have an image map? if so, how do I put that in?

What I did was put together an image map in photoshop. Using the background image as the bottom layer. I then removed that layer(the background image) from the photoshop file and I had built the rest up in transparent layers. I then saved the imagemap. Which looked blank at this point as GIfs. Each hover was a transparent gif with just the hover area coloured. This meant I could get low file sizes. I then took the background image and put it in a div.
It loads a hell of a lot faster than including the background image in all the slices.
You can see it in action here

I would be interested to know how fast it loads up for anyone on dial up.• Search & Rescue Aberystwyth Lifeboat
