Just because they have a domain doesn't mean they're developing a browser. Who knows what this means. Perhaps it's a mini RSS feed browser, it could be anything.

Yes doesn't mean that it will be a browser but if they can code browsers as well as search algorithms, it would be a beauty!

Who knows, another 5 years there may be a google OS?

Exactly. Will be interesting to see what it is for, but too early to draw conclusions.

You did read the news story in the link before the whois info, right!!

Based on the half-dozen hires in recent weeks, Google appears to be planning to launch its own Web browser and other software products to challenge Microsoft.

Google has wooed Joshua Bloch, one of the main developers of the Internet programming language Java, from Sun Microsystems.

The company also hired four people who worked on Microsoft's Web browser, Internet Explorer, and later founded their own company. One of them, Adam Bosworth, is credited with being a driving force not only behind IE, but Microsoft's database-management program, Access.

Indeed. It was on /. three days ago. I'm just saying that all of this crap is one big psuedo event. Who cares. It's all going to be wild speculation. Who cares. Even if they do come out with something I highly doubt it will be in the near future. Right now we just have a few tidbits of information, nothing really concrete. I don't know about you, but I'm just sick of speculation on the Internet. It just gets old.

Agreed. And think about it... it's not that exciting.

They'd have to make a spectacular, secure browser with great CSS and XML support for me to be interested.

Integrated GMail support will be one feature for sure. That way they could work around the POP access, for a while, many people request.

This supposedly in-the-works browser is supposedly going to be gecko-based. That would certainly make things interesting in the browser front.

    The slashdot article about it.

Every browser has integrated GMail support (except the ones Google intentionally blocks out ). The only thing they'd be able to change would be mailto: handlers.

Opera 7.5, IE/Mac, and basically any browser that has JS blocked or doesn't support XMLHTTP.

I love IE too much. I wonder if there will be any anti-trust problems in blocking otheres.

No they are not free to block a browser if they are in public domain. If its an intranet or that sort of thing which is restricted to only few, then its ok but if they are for general public, you can't block out a browser intentionally. The example being the recent law suit by Opera Software against Microsoft as Microsoft allegedly blocked out Opera users from MSN & then it had to pay Opera a good deal of money to have the law suit withdrawn.

I don't think that Microsoft is evil & no sane person believes that Microsoft is evil. They are a business house & like every business house, they strive for market leadership & it can be obtained only by becoming ruthless & shoving your competitors out of the market. Business is not a game for gentlemen.

OMG If they really build a browser it will be the dead to all webmasters that use Adsense.
They will build in adwords in the browser like opera when you get it for free.
They will use our websites and our content and make money from our websites.
Say goodbye to all your adsense money Google will backstab use all.

    Digitalman,

i am afraid you are right here... google will benefit and get richer, browser users (shoppers) will do too, content publishers using adsense won't be happy as well as those of us doing front-end development who will now have to test in one more browser (unless google developers don't deviate at all from a standards-compliant moz core)

even though i like google as a company and their search engine, they've shown they are pretty greedy with their adwords, adsense. ever since the two were launched they've been constantly adding more features and growing them to display more ads to make more revenue up to the controversial gmail. so, i would not be surprised if their own browser (if launched), will display adwords, similar to what free opera is doing (which is again a partnership with google i believe)

i would really like to see some good competition showing up for google's core (or at least what has been their core competency -- search engine). to my taste, they are too absorbed in advertising business.
