Our site has been up for several years and recently we have been hit by frommail scanners. When I review the logs I find their IP address and look it up. Every one of them has come from a known SPAM address. Further research shows this is a common techniques where they can use formmail from a site to send their SPAM. (It just dawned upon me that someone here could actually be doing this—man, who can you trust?) Anyway, how can we protect ourselves and all the people who use our forums? This is happening daily at this point. I noticed a spike in my error logs that tipped me off. We usually just have an error a day or less but now we are seeing a dozen or two while this happens. I would like to know if there is a way to prevent these scanners from entering the site? Can I use robots.txt or htaccess to help?
Good question. I'm wondering if you can somehow limit how many times formail is used per day. My form mail script is never used more than 10 times a day. It would be nice to have the option to disable formmail after 10 uses a day. This seems like a possible solution, but I wouldn't know how to implement it. Perhaps someone else has a better solution.
