blame it on malarkey's question over at the accessify forums

well, six hours later, my first ever firefox extension: firefox longdesc extension. after installing, it adds a "View Image Longdesc: ..." option to the browser's image context menu (only if said image has a longdesc attribute set, of course).
as this is still version 0.1 there may be bugs lurking ... however initial testing gave me thoroughly positive results.
works in firefox 1.0PR and mozilla 1.7.3, but there's no reason it shouldn't work in earlier builds (not had time to test, though).

i've got a page that i used for testing, but it's pretty cr*p. i'll spend a bit more time tonight to produce a nice example one, showing that the extension should work with different types of longdesc such as fully qualified domains, absolute links, relative links and in-page links / fragment identifiers.

updated the extension to version 0.2 (with dramatically simplified javascript, which now handles pages from local drives, i.e. file:// protocol).

also created a little demo page http://www.splintered.co.uk/experime...esc_extension/

Feedback: after using the fourth image, the fragment identifier, how do get rid of the longdesc? I can hit the back button and it works, but do you think that is satisfactory? And how about having the longdesc open in a new pop up window so it can be closed easily and the user never has to leave the page?

well, i was only illustrating some of the choices the web developers might make in how to handle longdescs (either linking to an external document, or to a section within the same page).

ok, planned features for the next release ... user-configurable option on how to handle the longdesc: same window, new tab, new window (and only show a single "View Image Longdesc..." command in the context menu) or having all three variants next to each other in the menu
