    CRT or TFT?

Ok i am purchasing a new tower. I have the option of whether to include a monitor with the tower or not. I would rather it did because its cheaper than the retail prices of monitors. But..whatever i chose its going to set me back a fair bit.

So, which monitor out of these would you chose and why? Which is better? CRT or TFT?

    - 15" CRT = 84
    - 15" TFT = 176
    - 17" TFT = 205

15' inch is just too small.

The benefit of the TFT is obvious - space saver. But nothing beats the display quality of a CRT.

I absolutely LOVE my Samsung 17' TFT. I was soooo happy to get rid of the CRT. My health has improved as an added bonus - CRTs are not kind to living organisms.

I would definitely go with 17". CRT or TFT are more of a space/price issue. As for performance, it feels about the same anyway (in gaming, that is).

I'd consider a 19-inch TFT LCD, actually. They're definitely smaller than a 19-inch CRT, but they're crisp and flexible.

DEFINETLY a TFT. They are so much easier on the eyes, and a 15" one corresponds to a 17" CRT in screen space.

Most certainly a TFT, it is amazing the difference. CRT just hurt the eyes.

I'd go for a 19" CRT screen, will set you back $150 and that is just retail price.

Of course, if you do not have the space to put a CRT screen, the choice is made rather quick. But if you do, TFT screens will set you back twice the amount a CRT screen will.
There is absolutely no difference to the health if you buy a flat screen CRT with a refresh rate of 100 or 120.
A second thing to consider, if you are looking at a TFT screen from an angle, the quality decreases very much (the bigger the angle, the worse the quality). Looking at a movie with a group of people might prove to be difficult.

The viewable angle on TFTs is much improved in newer models. I would go with the TFT and save some space.

I have a new PC on the way. I considered the monitor choices and I just couldn't justify the expense of a TFT. I plan to pick up a 19 inch CRT locally in the next week. 17 inch is the smallest I would accept and 19 inch is the best choice for me, really. I have plenty of desk space.

Out of the choices you mentioned, it all depends on how much you can justify spending.

ditto - also I have noticed in some friends TFT that you cannot see a great deal of definition in graphics and images... there is probably a highly technical reason for why - BUT I am sticking with my CRT purely cos I find it gives a better image to view.

Hmm....CRTs damage eyes? You mean like permanent damage? I was always under the impression that CRTs provided a WAY better image.

Not a WAY better, but slightly better image. If I plug my 14inch laptop to an external 17inch CRT monitor, the difference is visible. Not so much in color but the jaggedness of anti-aliased things.

I don't know about damaging eye but some backgrounds on my websites that are visisble to me are not on TFT screens, also some artist images look flat so you lose some definition

This is most likely cheap TFT screens of lesser quality. My father has one that's really crappy from a graphics and colour standpoint, but in general, TFT does not have a graphic quality problem per definition.

Nobody said they damage the eyes, you worrier. :P The difference between CRTs and TFTs is that CRT refresh a certain amount of times per second (that's what refresh rate is), while the TFT is always on. It has an infinite refresh rate, so to speak. This is easier on the eyes, unless you have a CTR with very, very high refresh rate (120+).

I was very much under the impression that they did damage eyes with prolonged use. Because when working and you have an eye test, the company you work for are entitled to pay for the part of the eye test, providing you use a monitor at work. In the uk at least. Not too sure whether this is aimed at crt's or tft's but I find that it is real hard work using a crt and the tft on laptop is so nice and crisp.

I am getting a new monitor too. As I currently use my laptop as my main machine I will be going for a TFT as it has to be an improvement on the laptop. I really want a 19 inch but they are far too expensive. EBuyer do some good ones. Can anyone recommend anything under 200 for me? One thing though, it needs to be black/silver to match my lovely tower.

    Hi guys,

I'm thinking of buying this: http://www.jes-computer.de/product_info.php?pID=17945

It's a 19" TFT ViewSonic VX910. I've heard great things about it but I'm wondering how it'll cope with my web dev stuff. I mean it has a native res of 1280 x 1024 so will I be able to resize the res to see what sites look like at "user standard" sizes like 800x600 or 1024x768 or will I just use the resize window tool that comes with the Web Dev toolbar for Firefox?
