    Red face div height, yawn...

    Same old story - need to stretch the "menu" div to the same depth as the "content" div (or 100% height of "wrapper" div)...

    <html>

    <head>
    <style type="text/css" media="screen"><!--

    #wrapper { height: auto }
    #menu { visibility: visible; position: absolute; top: 155px; left: -1px; width: 140px; border-top: 1px solid #ccc; border-right: 1px solid #ccc }
    #content { visibility: visible; position: absolute; top: 155px; left: 155px; width: 504px; height: auto; border-top: 1px solid #ddd; border-right: 1px solid #ddd }
    --></style>
    </head>

    <body>
    <div id="wrapper">
    <div id="menu">
    <p><a href="(EmptyReference!)">Menu item #1</a>
    <br>
    <a href="(EmptyReference!)">Menu item #1</a></p>
    </div>
    <div id="content">
    Text.<br>
    Text.<br>
    Text.<br>
    Text.<br>
    Text.<br>
    Text.<br>
    Text.<br>
    Text.<br>
    Text.<br>
    </div>
    </div>
    </body>

    </html>

    I want the left column's depth to match the right column's depth which is determined by the depth of the text in the right column, which is not necessarily 100% depth of page...

    I posted that because tiling an appropriate background image, as he talks about, is often an adequate solution.
    Try this instead: http://www.pmob.co.uk/temp/2column_simple_1.htm
    These are all accessible through the stickies at the top of the css forum. You should familiarise yourself with the topics covered. They're stickied because these topics are as you put it, the

    Thanks for your time - I had browsed thru the stickies but was (unrealistically) looking for a neat bit of code that would actually force a div to stretch to the depth of it's containing div, not give the impression it had (as I'm familiar with background colour solutions and my columns have no bgd colour, just a border on the right side). That said, the clue here I guess is "work around", so I've completely rethought the layout/coding now so the content column now provides the right border for the menu column, giving the impression the menu column is stretching to the same depth as the content column...
