Thanks for your time - I had browsed thru the stickies but was (unrealistically) looking for a neat bit of code that would actually force a div to stretch to the depth of it's containing div, not give the impression it had (as I'm familiar with background colour solutions and my columns have no bgd colour, just a border on the right side). That said, the clue here I guess is "work around", so I've completely rethought the layout/coding now so the content column now provides the right border for the menu column, giving the impression the menu column is stretching to the same depth as the content column...
