    spokenwords.net

hey guys, I've got this new forum up and I need feedback on quality, content and color.

    The site is http://www.spokenwords.net

Its a site that contains discussions about poetry, literature, politics, photoshop, 2d rendering, photography, digital expression, recent news etc... I could go on but just check it out if you want to know more

Anyways critique me, the banners on the top arent really to great but I've been focusing on phpbb hacks latley. As for the colors thats a big problem I want to keep it light with a white bg but its a little too light as of now. Thanks!

Mmmm a bit tricky this one.

First thing I feel I should say is that for a visitor who hasn't visited your site, it isn't very clear what the site is all about. The navigation system seems a bit confusing, and I didn't really know what to do or where to go quite frankly. For example, the nav item "album" is referring to a music album? The newsletter is within the forum? or a forum itself?

I am sorry for the harshness of my words, but I am trying to be take a direct aproach to your site.

I think your in the right track when choosing a light layout, and I enjoy your color sheme, very good work with harmony and color balance.

Usability whould be your main focus right now in my perspective.

    Good luck.

This is massive. Links are all over the place, information everywhere. As I've never visited this site, it gives me a really messy introduction. As Pedro mentioned above, I'm not clear what this site is about and what it can do for me.

When I enter the forums it has this standard forum view and is pretty good.

However, you are not running sitepoint.com where you need sub forums to divide it all up so discussion runs smoothly. Start with a few sub forums, merge quite a few of your sub-forums. Then, when these grows and attracts traffic you can start making more sub-forums. As I've worked for MGON (kinda gamespy, all the *center.com sites - too bad it went down during the dot-com crash), I know how the pros creates their forum and attracts traffic to it.

As for navigation, try to put all important stuff on the left side, and the latest threads and etc on the right side. Then you would have a slight idea for where to look if you're searching for something.

You could also create fewer top links. They're too wide for your top banner anyways, which makes an bad difference. Your topbanner does look too commercialish aswell, I didnt care to give it a look before I really wanted to investigate it.

It might sound a bit harsh, but I'm just trying to help. Hope this does exactly that

The portal as so much links everywhere.

I can't seem to look at the color. I would be straining my eys just to see the links. Perhaps make the color a darker valeu rather than lighter, or i you don't want to remove it, make a second option for a darker skin.

    Anyways nice site

    Cheers, Enaido

Remove the 1px white border around the inside of all the tables. It clashes pretty hard.

the on mouse over color in the top bar makes the text vanish. Make it contrast more try #FFFFFF

Pretty good. The colours a strong, I'm a fan of the gold and silver. Looks pretty classy.

Not sure about the heading though. Looks too cut off from the rest of the design.

The colors are nice, except for the roll overs. The gray is kind of hard to see. Maybe try orage or a burgundy.

I think you should change the announcements. Instead od declaring them seperately, make one large announcement box and you can iterate through the annoucements there.

Perhaps only show the last two announcements with a link to read more.

I would suggest that you add a one sentence description about the site in big and put directly below the menu. so the first time user will know what it is about.

I like the colors and the hacks you have applied to the forum. The only thing I would change is to break this image (http://www.spokenwords.net/randombanners/SW_one.jpg) in to 2 images. One that holds the person/words and one that holds the title of the site. Then align the person on the left and the title on the right so that on large monitors the image isn't trapped in the middle. Does that make sense. The way it is now makes it look like your banner is an advertisement.

First and foremost, I need something with easy access that explains what the site is. Your header graphic attempts to do this, which is a pretty smart idea in and of itself, but since some of the things you list (most notably, "Digital expression") don't fit in with my idea of "spoken words," I immediately went looking for an "About" section. Finding none, I instead clicked on "FAQ," which only gives details about the forum.

I agree with the others in feelling overwhelmed by the info available on the main page and trying to make sense of it. For example, the board statistics are above the most recent topics, which is the opposite of what I'd want as a user. The stats are important to use, as the owner, but as a forum user I just want to see what people are talking about.

Additionally, you might be able to combine some of your info; for example, the "Log In" box could easily also incorporate the "Who's Online" and "Chat" info. Or the latter two could be combined with the "Statistics" box.

Finally, your current navigation appears to be overkill. The top nav is overloaded and many of those links are repeated immediately to the lower left under "Board Navigation." My suggestion would be to lose the "Board Navigation" box entirely and rewrite the top nav with:

    Home
    Forum
    Album
    Newsletter
    FAQ
    Search

The log in and register information is already to the lower right. The other bits could go elsewhere, but don't seem necessary to have repeated on every page.

    Good luck / AG

if u ajust the banner to left justified and get rid of the black boarder
    it would look better.
