    What is this effect?

    The running window on the side that scrolls and communicates with the main window. I've seen this on several sites but can't find a tutorial on it.

    You mean the thing on the left that scrolls with the page? I'd imagine all that's happening is that a function is called when the onscroll event is fired to keep it a certain distance from the top of the viewable area.

    It's a shame IE doesn't support position: fixed (or does it now?).

    Personally I think the effect is pretty disturbing. I've seen versions that "accelerate and stop" a lot smoother. You might want to consider searching some more to find one of these so your navbar does not come up "blocky"
