My site traffic just jumped from about 50-60 hits per day to 300 hits sofar today.

I had a look at the referrers, and these are some of the domains of the top referrers for this new traffic.

    vision.nl
    ilse.nl
(why all these dutch search engines???)
    nl.altavista.com
    google.yahoo.com
    google.com
    simplex.nl

I have even got some hits with the referrer as dutch adult sites.

I KNOW my site hasn't appeared in any search engines yet!!

I want to this be a warning to those using stats4all.com - I will check my server's stats later to see if these referrers have turned up in their logs.

I know what it might be, maybe somebody else included the wrong code on their page, and the code included my username "mmj" instead of theirs.

hm.......... Sorry I realise this has changed from a search engine post to an off-topic post...sorry

Perhaps your stats tracker is a little off today? Anytime you rely on a free service, this is bound to happen. Just a thought.

This may not be the cause of this occurance, but just something to remember on the side is that search engines do not just add sites which are specifically added by Webmasters. If they come accross a link on another page they are crawling, they may also add it.

I had a University lecturer who did a test to see how long it would take the search engines to find here site without submitting to any of them. The first engine found it in 3 months (not sure which one) and this continued up to 6 months when most of the major search engines had indexed her page.

Yes the abnormal traffic has stopped, and my server stats do not reflect this traffic.

So I can only guess that it was an error with stats4all.

It wasn't just the search engine crawlers, it was their search results engines...

I only submitted this site to search engines yesterday, and I know it is not in any yet (apart from nbci - my sites always appear in there first).
