    A decent (free) PHP Editor

    Hi all,

    I have recently bought a new computer and it came pre-installed with Windows XP. That would be fine except that I've been running Linux for the last 12 months and I got really used to the features of the text editor called Kate.
    Now that I'm on XP, I can't find a decent free PHP Editor. I know I'm asking a lot considering I'm looking for something free but, due to my lack of a budget, I can't afford to pay for a decent one yet (if I could I'd get Zend Studio).

    Anyway, does anyone know of a free PHP editor with the following features:
    • Syntax colouring (must have);
    • Automatic indenting (pressing tab moves the cursor either inline with the above code or one tab further if the above line is an opening bracket - must have);
    • Code completion (not important);
    • Code hints (i.e. typing mysql_connect displays a list of attributes for the function - not important);
    • And an un-cluttered interface.
    I know it's a lot to ask, but surely there is something available (even a port of Kate for Windows but I can't find one). I've tried Developer's Pad but it's slow and still has a few weird bugs. HTML-Kit has a really cluttered (IMHO) interface and I can't seem to find many other Editor's even worth downloading.

    It's times like these that I wish I could code in C/C++

    Anyway, any suggestions would be very much appreciated

    Thanks in advance,
    Josh

    I also recommend Crimson. Crimson comes with loads of language definitions, so you get color coding and auto indenting for almost any text file you open (ASP, PHP, HTML, Javascript, CSS, NSI, who knows what else).

    Wink

    UltraEdit ( www.ultraedit.com ) is what I use. However, it is not free, just the best $35 I have spent on software, so far.

    Just as an aside, if you are so used to Linux, why not wipe XP and install Linux on your new box?

    aussiejosh, I use Kate as well, it really is great. I do all my dev stuff in Linux, you could dual boot xp with Lin, I don't find it too much of a hassle.

    I use Edit+ I dont know if it does all those things listed above but its pretty decent. It supposed to be a 30-day trial but after that I think its just a countdown or something to continue using it forever.

    Zend Studio Personal Edition (or something) is free. Some features are left out from the standard version but it's definately worth checking out!

    I just downloaded Maguma free and it seems awesome. It reminds me of Zend but it seems slightly faster. The only strange thing was that I got 3 links emailed to me when I signed up for it. I got links for a basic system, standard system or a complete system. I chose complete because they all looked to be free but I don't know the differences. Hopefully I didn't spend nearly 2 hours downloading an 18MB file to discover I got the pay version hehe

    Anyway they all look good so I have a few options if Maguma doesn't work out.

    Thanks a lot for everyone's suggestions, I'll definitely be looking into them later on. Maybe I'll find something even better than Maguma.

    Thanks again everyone

    Josh
