Post Windows XP Users: Update to Service Pack 2 Now!

Windows XP Service Pack 2 is (almost) out.

Update now for the latest security and stability enhancements!

    Edit:

It turns out that Microsoft is only releasing SP2 via Automatic Updates at the moment, so make sure it's turned on and it's ready.

As a victim of Win NT4 SP2, SP4 & SP6, my advice is to always delay installing any even numbered service pack for at least two weeks until the dust settles and other lemmings have tried it first.

I've been running RC2 for quite a while, mainly for the Bluetooth support which did have a few bugs, hope they've been sorted out in the stable release.

How have you gotten ahold of it? I don't have an MSDN subscription, so I can't get it through that channel.

Is there any other way than to just sit tight and wait for Automatic Updates to do its thing?

Hmm... I'm not big on peer-to-peer file sharing networks...

I have the RC2 candidate on my main machine and nothing on the others. My other machines will upgrade on an automatic schedule once it is released completely.

Actually it is not really out yet. From Microsoft website:

Coming Soon: Windows XP Service Pack 2
Microsoft is preparing to release a free update for Windows XP that provides better protection against hackers, viruses, and worms. The best way to ensure you get Windows XP Service Pack 2 when it is released is by turning on Automatic Updates today.
I actually require auto update to notify before download and before install. I will not allow this to be installed until after the final release is made and I see how many raves or howls of anguish there are first.

Hmmm, actually I just read a news article on FoxNews that says it is released. One would think, however, since Microsoft has been trumpeting this SP so much that had it been released their website would say so. Then again, this is Microsoft we are talking about.

Okay, I just read that Windows XP Service Pack 2 is incompatible with Symantec and Zone Labs' security software, and may "hammer as many as three out of five" computers with major problems.

Guess I'll wait a bit, then.

I don't have any problems with Symantec software on my machine. Haven't used Zone Alarm since I upgraded to XP as it caused to many problems that they didn't have any resolution for.

I use a hardware firewall and AVG free for anti-virus. So far I haven't had any issues with SP2 or unwanted bugs on my machine.

I think I'll hold off for a little bit. As others have said, I don't really mind waiting a week or two behind others just to be on the safe side.

I suspect for those of us who use ZoneAlarm, there will be problems when SP2 is first installed until we disable Microsoft's built in firewall.

Yep. Being I am up-to-date in my virus protection, do windows updates religeously, don't even dream of using IE, and have a hardware firewall plus the windows firewall on, combined with the fact that I'm not a complete idiot means I'm not having an issues now and can certainly wait for others to be more adventurous and act as guinea pigs for me.

Well, I decided to contradict myself and back up.

I just bit the bullet, and am exceedingly glad to have done so.

I used the most recent Neowin mirror, which is the official RTM build from Microsoft.

The installation was a bit lengthy, about 20 or 30 minutes.

The new security center is great, as is the enhanced wireless network support (my connections are solely wireless).

    Yay Microsoft!

I've got the pleasure on installing it on 20+ computers, so I've told everyone not to install it until I do it. I'm downloading the IT/Developer version now (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en), going to be testing it tomorrow. The last thing I was to have to deal with is it screwing up everyones machine!

The version that will be available for most people should be along in a few days.

I'm also going to be installing it on 3 machines at home on a wireless network, two laptop with B cards and a PC with a G card, should be intresting to see how that one goes.

    No CS tonite then...

So is that link the actual final SP2? I realize it's for network installs (bigger file), which is what I plan to do with it.
