You can also try Aaron's SEO book (and I am not advertising here), which is a great asset to anyone who wants to better his/her SEO experience. I know it did miracles for me ...

Googles purposely does not list all links pointing to a particular page. This is an effort to keep webmasters from manipulating their system. They also only update backlinks on a periodic basis so you may have acquired new backlinks but they haven't been refelected in Googles update. That doesn't mean Google doesn't know they are there. They just haven't publicy acknowledged them yet. It is also important to keep in mind that Google only shows backlinks for the specific page you requested (usually the homepage), not the whole site like other search engines do.

Also, Google also only displays the number of backlinks to one specific page. This is usually the homepage since that is what most webmasters check for. Yahoo, and other search engines, report the number of incomming links per domain.
Not entirely true, Yahoo and MSN differ from Google by having the option to do a linkdomain: search.. while all 3 of the search engines still support the link: operator (page specific).

I see that I am way late in joining the party, but I just want to say thanks for the post. That is one of the most thorough posts I have ever seen. Very good information for those of us who want to know where to start.

You learn about optimizing by reading a lot and I miss one website with background information. Try to understand the way a SE is working, and although algorithems are changing every time, the basid idea is still there.

This guy wrote about Altavista, but you also can see it more SE related.

It is worth to do a search for it At least it helped me years ago (when av was still the no 1) to understand about SEO and why clean writing is so important.

One more for any long lonely night:

Excellent resource, although sorry to be a grammar nazi but you might want to read this:

    http://dictionary.reference.com/help...then-than.html

Would normally try to ignore something like that but since it's an FAQ...

It's weird I run a big content website and all the writers have their problems, but the above problem seems to be unique to our contributors from USA and Canada. Does "then" and "than" sound the same in North America?

Great thread. I've heard the inbound links are great. but that reciprocal linking is not.

Is there more weight on inbound links with no reciprical back to that site.

SEO book is an excellent resource for SEO information in my opinion. I think the owner sells a book for $80 and shows you exactly how he got his website to the top of the SERPs for competitive keywords like SEO.

    Very good and useful article.
However, I was curious about the above mentioned sites and see what I found there http://www.tipsntutorials.com/tips/Web-Design/40
Short tips and tutorials with extremely long comments - tons of links added as comments to each of them. Quite disapointing when visiting it after reference from this well written article.

Most excellent thread. That answered a lot of my confused concerns (such as how can outbound links from a webpage improve its PR).

    Thanks
