How do you import a dump file?

I know how to import files ending with the .sql extension into an online database using phpMyAdmin. But I just downloaded an enormous database table ending with a .dmp extension and want to import it into my local database.

I opened phpMyAdmin, then "Query window," like I usually do and browsed to the file on my desktop. I wasn't sure if I should choose Autodetect, None or Gzipped, so I tried all three. Each time I got the message, "No SQL query!"

So what am I supposed to do with this .dmp file?
