Hello. I am thinking about starting a car conglomerate website- that involves messsageboards/etc. This would be the same as SitePoint.com except for using the automotive category. What do you guys average on CPM's when selling banner space? >$1? <$1? I am wondering because Burst Media/Sonar will tell us one thing and other people say that they are cheating us. What is your averages for your site? What are your pageviews/hits/content?

    Thanks!

our whole network currently remains to do above $1 CPM - with some sites even doing as high as $4 CPM - the trick is directly selling advertising, that's where the money is and where it won't leave any time soon IMHO

    Have a great day,

10 ($15ish) CPM for me, and deals on bulk discounts, per month orders etc.

I use BURST! Media and have no CPM campaigns under $2 CPM. I deselect all lower ones.

I know SitePoint have a huge CPM rate ($35-50 for ads on the main network sites) - because of the targeted visitors who are more likely to click than visitors to most sites.
I haven't yet started offering CPM ads on my site but I am about to launch another site that will use CPM - not sure of rates yet. I guess it depends totally on both traffic and demographic data on visitors.

My network average for banners is about $1.1CPM, using Engage Media, Burst!, CJ and a few direct-sold campaigns.

Not great (oh, for the good old days), but enough to cover the bandwidth costs + a little extra.

Why, Sarge, that was an EXCELLENT first post! You sure put as all in awe with that awsome argument!

CPM is not dead - not by a long shot. It's just not very easy to get good rates. For branding purposes, it can be excellent. For instance, rackspace. If someone tells me to think about a host with dedicated servers, I think rackspace, spmply becasue their aggresive advertisign on sitepoint. In that way, CPM is effective. To say it is dead is to exaggerate. In fact, it a total lie. A lot of sites are making good money on CPM.

35$??? Does sitepoint really have CPM rates that incredible? Wow - cool. But I guess that it's super targeted, though. I'd better start selling direct advertising. Are there any good threads on how to do that?

Well, you cant go to an advertising network, since they seldom accept sites that isn't launched. (It's rare to get 1$ CPM with a network anyway) I'd suggest bugging some companies directly for advertising - that is far more effective.

There is no magic place where you can find 1$, however. You have to out there and look for them.

Firstly, you should sign up with a media marketplace such as OneMediaPlace, to put your properties in front of advertisers. If you're willing to take a gamble, you could also auction some of your inventory off on eBay.

Then, you need to contact the marketing departments of companies that are well suited to your audience. If, for example, your network is general-purpose, you should contact the companies behind Grab.com, TreeLoot, Credit card companies, major consumer brands, Amazon.com, MSN, etc, etc. If your site has a particular focus, such as webmasters, women, gamers or investors, then you should contact companies that have a large presence in that particular market.

If you are not willing to accept less than $1CPM, then you should set your rate card at about $3CPM, since advertisers will attempt to negotiate below the rate card price regardless of how low it is when presented to them. Thus, if you offer than $1CPM off the bat, they might try to cut you down to $0.50 or less. If, however, you offer them coverage for $2.50-$3CPM, they will probably cut you down to $1.50-$1. It's more about psychology than mathematics.

OIC, you were asking me to list advertisers who would like to target the web development audience.

Well, you should start by contacting web hosting firms. They are often willing to advertise across webmaster-related resources on a CPM basis, and many of them know exactly how high they can go in order to maintain a solid ROI.

After that, you can contact software vendors, ad agencies, design firms, pay-for-performance search engines and others whose main target is the web development community.

It takes a great deal of legwork, but if you handle it well, it is possible to prosper from direct sales.

Personally, I used to be quite lenient in when I would demand payment. These days, though, I always ask for payment up-front for any direct-sold campaigns. Larger campaigns, or campaigns for advertisers that you've worked with successfully in the past are probably better suited to an up-front deposit with the balance payable within 2 weeks-1 month from the conclusion of the campaign.

The minimum CPM really depends on the compromise to which you and your advertisers are willing to come. General-audience run-of-network stuff could sell as low as $1CPM, while narrow, geotargeted, webmaster-centric campaigns could sell for anywhere between $2-$10CPM.

Skinsworld, most online ad agencies that base their payment model on a CPM basis are feeling the squeeze right now, and are serving large proportions on unpaid default inventory to their existing publishers. The last thing that they want to do during the market downturn is to increase their inventory under management.

This is why you are being rejected from these programs. You shouldn't see this as a indictment upon the quality of your site; the agencies just aren't able to attract as many advertisers as what they could pre-crash.

How long has your site been running? Have you got any meaningful traffic figures yet? Many of the larger agencies want more than traffic forecasts, they want actual figures.

Omair, this is starting to drift too far off-topic.

You can find a great deal of promotional advice by exploring the "Promotion & Marketing" and "Search Engine Wars" forums here:
    http://www.sitepointforums.com/

There is a great deal more that can be done than simply search engine submission/optimization. Think about establishing an affiliate program, exchanging links with similar sites, participating in toplists or banner exchanges (not recommended for commercial sites), promote your service though email marketing, etc, etc...

Now, Omair, as Czar pointed out, it's way off topic, and you should avoid that, but now that he damage is done - I might as well inform you that http://www.selfpromotion.com is a great place to start out.
