However..the better ones are usually paid. What you could do is crack it..Download it, crack it, so you get the full paid version for nothing .
Cracks site would be <* removed by Advisor *> or something.
Im not 100% for cracks, but sometimes they help you.

I don't think we promote warez or anything that violates copyrights here.

Im not promoting it. Its wrong which is why it doesnt get my total support. But some developers may find it better using more advanced software which needs payment. Anyway its a matter of choice.

    Eclipse of course!

Eclipse is a great IDE, haven't used very much with PHP though, but it is wonderful with Java. Try it out! http://www.eclipse.org

Eclipse is "teh pwn". They just released version 3. PHP-Eclipse is a good sf project that aims to add the same kind of advanced funtionality to Eclipse that it supports for Java natively.

However, if you aren't going to be maintaining any huge projects or anything, then Eclipse is probably completely overkill. In this case, I'd suggest VIM, because it supports advanced syntax highlighting and other uber functionality (like file go-to's).

not really a code editor, but just a text editor, i prefer editpad. the 'lite' version is free for noncommercial use and can do almost everything the full version can. i love it

    I use PHPEclipse
    http://www.phpeclipse.de/

Unfortunately it's not really easy to install, but you get all the benefits of eclipse (CVS, TeamWork)
