PostgreSQL and Large Object data types

    Hi All,

We are developing a realestate site in PHP and PostgreSQL... We are considering inserting all images into the database rather then allowing the user to directly upload images to the webserver... There will be many thousands of images (100kb - 500kb) and my question is, will retrieving images from the database going to be noticeably slower then using a direct url to an images directory on the server? Also can you optimise images that are coming from the database on the fly, as in once they are retrieved from the postgreSQL database can we resize and compress the image further?

    Thanks
