    Hi guys,

    Just wanted to start playing with Linux, my modem is a winmodem, and so I left with ADSL, first I have to install the NIC.

    (RedHat 7.0)
    I'm having problem installing a NIC (SMC 1211TX-PCI) which is RealTek module, I use: rtl8139

    I added the module into the kernel using: "insmod rtl8139"
    then I added "alias eth0 rtl8139" into modules.conf
    also used netcfg to add the interface:
    "eth0 192.168.1.42 DHCP"

    then I restarted, but when booting, it said:
    "Determining IP address... failed"

    and it just couldn't recognize the NIC. I'm pretty sure that it's the correct driver.

    So I don't know what is wrong , I really appreciate any help...

    I believe IE for Linux is under development by Corel & Microsoft, so it might be around in the near-ish future

    I use Netscape 4.76, Mozilla 0.7 and Konqueror (comes with KDE 2.x) on my Linux box.

    Netscape on Linux isn't even comparable to NS on Windows. It's so much faster, more stable and better in many other ways.
    It even starts within 6 seconds on this Celeron 400, 64 MB SDRAM.

    Believe me, you don't want to use IE once you're used to 'alternatives'. I've been using Mozilla for more than 6 months now, and I prefer it over any other browser I've used. I find IE even annoying at many points and so far I've only found one good point at IE: you can retry loading an image without reloading the whole page.

    Some random things IE misses:

    * An option to only accept cookies coming from the originating server.
    * ditto for images (ideal for avoiding banners and saves loading time if you're on dial-up)
    * cookies management
    * images management (select from which sites you don't want to load images)
    * build-in IRC-client
    * build-in email client
    * build-in wysiwyg editor (very handy to troubleshoot webpages which doesn't display or not right in the browser)
    * real skins
    * Side-bar (totally customizable, thus unlike IE 6.0 which keeps some annoying buttons on its side-bar)
    * the option to save an image before it's done loading
    * etc.

    All those functions are available in Mozilla and some in Netscape 4.x.

    sorry for changing the subject a bit
    For SuSe you can use the .rpm files available for Redhat. SuSe uses namely Redhat's system for RPM's

    Elledan,

    Have you tried Eazel's Nautilus? I don't have RH so I don't want to mess with it..... Hopefully a SuSE release will be coming shortly.

    No, I haven't tried it yet, and I probably won't try it soon, for I've still some more important things to do, like setting up a router, file-server, etc. with Linux.

    And KDE 2.1 isn't so bad either

    http://www.freshmeat.net is a good start

    Further you could visit some IRC channels devoted to Linux and ask those guys there where they get their software from.

    An example of such an IRC-channel: irc.linux.com:6667 #linuxhelp

    Sites like
    http://www.linux.org
    http://www.linuxstart.com
    http://www.linuxnewbie.org

    are also a good place to take a look around.

    If you want a specific piece of software, you can always post at Anandtech Forums, in the 'Operating Systems' forum.

    I'm glad I install and try Linux. It's really cool, (like transparent terminal, enlightment and stuff like that)
    Sorry if these stuff is old for you, but I love it! Even though, still have to do both Win and Linux

    Quick question, how do I capture the screen and save it?
    I tried PrintScreen button and paste into Paint but it doens't work. I'd like to show my desktop

    A search with Google yielded those results:

    http://www.kulua.org/Archives/kulua-.../msg00553.html

    http://www.troubleshooters.com/linux/scrshot.htm

    You can also take a screenshot using GIMP, but I don't have time to find the exact procedure in the documentation at http://www.gimp.org
