View previous owner(s) of a domain?

Is there any free service available that allows you to see the whois info for the previous owner(s) of a domain name? Like, if someone has a site, and they just let it die and the domain expire, and it gets picked up by a domain broker ... is there someplace where you can view the previous whois info? I'm trying to track down what happened to an old site I used to visit years ago and am not having much luck, so I figure if I can find the previous whois info somewhere ...

I have never seen or heard of this before, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. That data has to be stored somewhere.

I always wondered that as well.

I don't believe such records are kept and if they are for some reason somewhere I don't recall ever seeing them available anywhere.

When I first started my company Sky Visions I could not get skyvisions.com so I had to settle for skyvisions.net

I eventually did get skyvisions.com but it took like almost 3 years. I know at least 2 other people owned it before me. One was some guy trying to start some kind of satellite company that never made it off the ground.

I know if you search for a domain name without an extension on www.whois.sc it will give you variations of the word and whether its registered, was registered and dropped, or never registered. Not sure on the accuracy but its worth using to at least get an idea.

They have a "Whois History" which is supposed to show "historical whois records" however you have to pay to see that.

You can use Internet Archive at www.archive.org or www.alexa.com that can be of help for finding who was the previous owner.

When you type a domain name at Alexa you will see a Contact Info for that domain. If you bought a domain recently (very soon after it expired) then there can be the info of a previous owner.

www.archive.org is pretty good place to check.

Keep in mind though the records there only go back to 1996 which for most people though should be adequate.
