how to tell search engines this page is no longer valid

There are some older, outdated pages on my website that I've set up forwarding on so that if people are led there as a result of search engines that still have those pages indexed, they'll be forwarded to the correct page. However, I'd like to elminate these outdated pages altogether but don't want to lose the visits from people that might end up there.

How can I communicate with all the search engines that have these old, outdated pages still indexed, that I don't want them sending people to these pages anymore, but want them sent to the new pages instead?

I was thinking maybe the use of a particular metatag would do it...does anyone know?

Are you using Apache? If so, add this to your .htaccess file. Be sure to change the page names to reflect your pages:
    Code:
    Redirect Permanent /oldpage.html /newpage.html
Do one line for each page you'd like to redirect. The search engines will eventually wise up to what's going on after they crawl your site again.
