We are in the process of developing a new advertising service. I can't give you any details at this stage but I do need your help with getting it off the ground I am going to need to hire some people to sell advertising for this new service. I am not looking for an outside rep firm, I am looking for full time employees. The problem is I have no idea how to structure the pay scale. I would prefer to offer a very low salary with commissions so there would be little risk on my end. Do any of you have expereince with this? What kind of commission structure do you use? Any good sources or job sites you would recommend for something like this?

All the major job sites have salary survey information. Monster.com HotJobs.com Jobs.com Dice.com FlipDog.com

You're looking at a base pay of roughly $60K USD for a junior account executive + commissions. Senior account exectives can demand salaries for $100K and more.

Thanks for the information, it is much appreciated. I was a little surprised that the base salary would be so high since they get commissions as well. Any idea on what kind of commission rate most networks are paying their ad reps?

I think its between 5 and 15% although you'd have to research the exact number yourself at the aforementioned job sites. I did a little math a while back on Websidestory's SEC filings and I believe the sales-per-rep worked out to be about $400,000-$500,000. It'd be interesting to do a little bit of Math on how much each sales rep is bringing in at DoubleClick, 24/7 media and ValueClick (the other public ad networks who have to make filings with the SEC).

Yeah, I have been researching all the job sites and have seen commission rates anywhere between 5-10%. The higher the commission rate the lower the salary. The companies offering 10% commission where giving $20K - $30K a year in salary. Thanks for the information, I think I have enough information to move forward on this.
