ssi text counter

I am trying to put a simple ssi text counter on my page. I've read through the SSI stuff here at SitePoint and also at FreeSources.

When I use <!--#echo var="PAGE_COUNT"--> all that displays is (none). I know SSI is working because when I put <!--#echo var="DATE_LOCAL"--> it works.

Is there a trick to this?
