    Howdy everyone,

This topic is something I've been wondering about. In the last few months, with the pending slowdown in world economies, I've also seen a slow-down in dot-com jobs. Obviously the crash last year contributed to the slow-down, but in my area (Melbourne), nearly all the web design firms aren't taking ppl any longer and quite a few are severely downsizing.

This downsizing seems to be limited to people with skills in HTML, Flash, graphic design, and server-side languages (so mostly Net stuff). However the entrenched languages like Java, C++ and Perl are still going pretty strong.

So how's the situation down your end of the street?

    Its good actually.

And even though the economy is slowing spending on Internet related projects is still increasing. Many companies are having problems filling needing positions for lack of skilled people.

It is good in the UK, although most of the jobs are in London. They are well paid too.

I know one company that cam eto the conclusion that since the programmers (ie Perl, C++) already had to know html for their programs to work on the web, that they didn't need straight designers. So they laid them off and passed on the resposibility. Of course the programmers are on salary so it saves the company money.

The job situation in my home town of Hull in the UK is very good right now. There are very few people with viable design skills round here, and the ones that do have it charge extortionate prices to design sites.

I think i'll do quite well when my design co. officially launches later this year

    Cool

It doesn't seem too bad in SoCal right now.

    Unhappy

I don't believe there are a whole lot technical jobs in West Michigan. I graduate in a few months and have been doing some job searching. This area seems to be behind the rest of the country by quite a bit.

So, my wife and I will probably have to sell our home and move to a different area of the state or a different state all together. There is good and bad in that.
