So far I have to say I am a bit surprised by the results.

I would have expected the % of 1024x users to be higher. I also think the numbers are skewed by the votes for "other" which is partly my fault as the question on the poll top should have had the words "when browsing" included as did the first message post. I think a number of the votes in other were by those using resolution above 1024 for design purposes rather than general surfing.

For those using higher than 1024 on 17" monitors if you keep it up you probably will have trouble reading 800x600 in large font in 10 years.

I use 1280x1024x35x85 for everything (except 3D games, coz i want them to actually run), due to the fact that 1600x1200 is too small on my 17" monitor, my graphics card can do 2048x1536 max tho :O)

I was surprised to see that most of my users are using 1024x768 resolution.
Some are still in 640, but most are using 1024. Its good to see that more and more users are leaving this pain 640x480 !!

Excellent post. But no matter what, you should still keep to your site's statistics. ( your site may have more 800 by 600 pixel users etc. )

I think the 1024x768 being the higher vote here is because everyone is a developer and needs more room for all those tool paletes and such that load up in Dreamweaver / Photoshop etc.

I develop a lot of sites for 610 pixels wide. This works on any monitor 14" and up without the horizontal scrolling.

However, I won't compromise a good design and downgrade just to support 640x480.

Being a consultant and computer repair guy I've seen people with 19" monitors running 640x480 and 256 colors simply because they didn't know they could change the resolution.

I do almost everything in 1152x864

I really don't like 1280x1024 because the aspect ratio is not square (ie the pixels are slightly wider than square).

I usually use the internet in 1024x768 because so many sites use that annoying tiny verdana font, and nobody designs for 1152x864 so it's no problem using 1024x768

By the way - to those who use 640x480 - WOW! That is so wacky. I can read text in 640x480 from across the room. That is lower than television resolution (here in australia). I don't know what to say. Obviously I don't hate you for using that res -

But you must be incovenienced by the way the world's top sites all use tables widths wider than 640 (take sitepoint - or even yahoo).

I use 1024x768 with small fonts myself. I too don't see how you can use 640x480 especially for design. With Photoshop or Visual Basic on that resolution, you hardly have any work space room with the toolbars and tabs. And I too have seen people with wacky resolutions and layouts simply becuase they don't know how to change it. Look at a school computer lab, they usually have weird sizes of about everything sizeable.

I'll say. Here's a tip: Don't EVER say "this web page stinks!" when you're in a computer lab. Every web page stinks there. Especially in my school.

1024*768 (32Bit) is what I use. It's Perfect for my monitor. Nothing is too big or too small.


But, I design my page for 800*600 because most people don't know the beauty of diff screen resolutions and I suppose that 800*600 is the default.


Plus, if you are designing for anything more that 8/600, you're going to have to have a LOT of content. Because there is a lot of space.

640*480 - haha! Forget them. (sorry) going to have to scroll sideways also

and anyone using the older browsers are just going to have to upgrade.

On a 21 inch Mitsubishi DiamondPro which is usually hooked up to a Mac, I usually have the monitor set to 1152 x 870 @ 100MHz although if my eyes are getting tired or I am crusing the web in a more reclined posture I sometimes take it down a gear to 1024 x 768 @ 100 MHz and only sometimes when I want to get a more screen real estate do I go up to 1280 x 1024 (because my old video card only supports 75Mhz at that resolution - gets tiring on the eyes).

Designing for 640x680 is such a pain in the butt yes? But what about 250x250 and 2 colors? Cell phones accesing the Internet... WAP r0x0rs my world. d'oh!

It's definitely super hard to effectively use photoshop, dreamweaver, and fireworks unless you go to at least 1024x768...

I use 1024 X 768 with small fonts with a 17 monitor while I'm online, but I prefer 1152 x 864 to work.

Until i read this thread, I was commited to 800*600 w/ religous fervour.

I was always frustrated when using Dreamweaver or Fireworks because the toolbars where always getting in the way. It never occured to me that changing the screen res would change that - doh!

Anyway, I upgraded to 1024*768. What a difference! Small fonts where a little hard on the eyes for me at this res, so I changed the defualt to 125% (Not sure, but this may be an option unique to win2k).

I've always designed for 800*600. I've recently scrapped using tables and am now using <div> for layout (thanks to the article here at sitepoint). I'm planning on using client side script to reference a different stylesheet depending on the screen resloution & browser.
