    Question utf-8 or iso-8859

I've read that you need to specify your content-type, and it was suggested using utf-8. My sites are in English. I use HTML 4.01 Trans or Strict.

    Is this the right choice?

If so, other than specifying the content type in a meta tag, what do I need to do? Notepad will save files in utf-8. Is there anything else I need to do? If a php file generates a page, does the php need to be saved as uft-8 (rather than ANSI, which is the default for Notepad)? If I start coding in XHTML 1.0 Strict does that make a difference?

The reason I ask is that IE was adding some padding at the top of one of my pages when I saved that page as utf-8. Opera and Mozilla rendered it fine (or at least with less extra space).

Lots of questions here; thanks in advance!

iso-8859-1 is for Western European languages (which English is apart of). UTF-8 does some weird things sometimes, so I stick with iso-8859-1.
