    Smarty vs Zend Studio, etc.

Someone suggested I check out Smarty, so I did - and was promptly blown away. It looks like a person could spend a day just installing it, and I'm not absolutely certain what it does. It sounds like it's basically used for debugging PHP code, like Zend Studio. I just wondered what people on these forums recommend for PHP software.

Can you suggest some other programs I can check out, preferably freeware?

    Thanks.

By the way, is Smarty an editor? I thought it was a templating engine only.

Just a plain common garden templating engine but it works with most if not all WYSIWYG editors, including DW

Like Widow Maker says, it's a templating system.
