If you would like to install everything manually, then I would recommend reading the sample chapters by Kevin Yank, out of his book "Building a database driven website using PHP and MySQL". He provides a nice and detailed installation instruction. You can find that instruction here.
On the other hand, you could choose for a pre-installed package, like PHP Dev, which requires you to install a single package, and which will provide you with a running webserver with PHP pre-installed.
There is a complet auto installer for php called apachetriad the only downfall with this is that it hasa php nuke phpbb mail server ssl server and sql server
it installs and configures all of them with a wizard this was the only way i could fined to get php server functioning properly on my system!
