I used the Kazza Lite Codec pack which has the DIVX codec as well as many others. No spyware in it.

The file name is "klcodec203f.exe". I can't remember the original site I got it on but a quick search on google came up with this site to download it from.

http://download.pods.lv/DivX/ (although I can't say for sure the safety of downloading from this site)

You could also try XviD. Different codec but it plays DivX

It is, I have a copy of Matrix Reloaded in XviD. Took me a while to find a copy of the codec that worked properly but I got it Here is a link.

Xvid plays xvid formats -- pretty sure it doesn't play DivX formats.

As far as your question goes, you can just install the DivX codec and nothing else -- it's pretty clean that way.

I wouldn't recommend the Nimo Codec Pack or anything -- they're easy to use, but they can screw a lot of things up, causing trouble in the future. So be wary.

    Incorrect.

Both DivX and Xvid are MPEG-4 formats, i.e. they're bitstream-compatible.

The only MPEG-4 format so far which requires it's own codec is (who'd 've guessed?) MSFTs usual variation of this standard. WMV is evil.

Alright, but you'll find that XviD will probably not play all DivX-encoded movies and vice versa, thus usually requiring one to have both pieces of software in order to have the ability to play all movies. At least that has been my experience.

I'll agree with you fully there.

    Care to provide some details?

Considering that MPEG-4 defines a standard format, any codec which claims to be 'MPEG-4 compatible' should work with any other MPEG-4-compatible codec. If not, then that would mean that the codec and/or encoder is not fully compatible.

I also recommend the K-Lite codec pack (and Real Alternative and Quicktime alternative for the Real Media and Quicktime codecs). You'd find yourself pretty much well-equipped with codecs to handle almost any video or sound files you may find.

As for a player, Media Player Classic (http://sourceforge.net/project/showf...ckage_id=84358) is my favorite/

Tell you what. I consider a codec "working" when I'm getting video and sound (I realize both are mutually exclusive, one not necessarily requiring the other). I have in the past not been able to play XviD encoded movies when I have only the DivX codec installed. I therefore condsider the DivX codec unable to play back all XviD encoded files.

Conversely, I've read notes on various sites; here's an example:

    Proof enough? -- it's all I have.

I agree with Chu's Real alternative and QuickTime alternative codecs -- much less bloat and you can still play everything back.

Heh, the first DivX (then DivX;-)) codec was a hacked version of MSFT's MPEG-4 codec. It's not so weird that it isn't fully MPEG-4 compatible.

As far as the Xvid issue, I watch a lot of video files (anime fansubs) encoded using a variety of codecs. I never had any problems playing back Xvid files despite never having installed the Xvid codec (only the DivX one, now just ffdshow), nor have I heard anyone else complain about it.

Methinks it's probably because of a lousy encoding program rather than the actual codec that you encountered those problems.

I can vouch for the fact that my Reloaded XviD wouldn't play when I only had DivX installed. Whether it was an encoder issue or not I don't know...
