PHP Equivalent to the ASP Application vars

I was just going over some old ASP code in my head and converting it to PHP and got stumped.

Is there a PHP equivalent to the ASP Application variables?

ASP session vars are basically the same as PHP session vars but what type of variable can you create that will span sessions and be accessible to all users?

There's no such thing in PHP...

Maybe textfiles or database could emulate that...
