BerkleyDB. It's file-based, but still quite easy to work with.

okay, if you want to classify access in with database servers (i would too), then seriously, i would use an odbc driver for excel, and use sql anyway

I've recently been turned to Firebird DB, any comments about that database? I did search sitepoint, however there has only been 14 posts, which mention it, and they're about 2 years old? I currently have it enabled on the server (as of today) and would be interested in using it as the admin mentioned it was faster than SQL Server & MySQL when he ran the same queries.

damn right! Very impressed with firebird atm -- using it to run a few million records in a couple of windows apps. Speed is beating MS SQL and MySQL consitantly.

[1], if anyone has some decent resources for FireBird please post them.
