Is there a way to store images and other media in a MySQL database? If so does anyone know a tutorial of how I can learn or if anyone can explain it to me?

There is an article on SitePoint dealing with mySQL - http://www.webmasterbase.com/article.php/228

Also, IMHO, I would store url links to your image files instead of actual images. It looks the same to the end user and helps to keep your database smaller.

    Try this article:

Storing Binary Data In a DB

And yes, it is *much* more effective to store the source address of the images instead - you could easily allow yourself to upload the images from the web though, so you wouldn't have to resort to FTP.
