This is not so much a question as it is a complaint. This has been bothering me for some time now and I just came across it again today.

Why do webmasters use text that enlarges when you hover over it? It is the single most annoying use of css on the net because most don't use it properly! Case in point: the menu bar for the NCAA(www.ncaa.org), and check out the first section. Oh my eyes, have you no mercy!?! It shifts the page around every time youhover over a link!

    Yuk!

If there is anyone out there who does this, could you please explain to me why? Why?

I can see it when used in a manner that doesn't shift the page back and forth, but if it does why do you leave it this way? Why?

    Doesn't this bother anyone else???

Sorry, but I have to add these smilies to fully express my sentiments on this topic:

I Must admit that I totally agree.

I too would like to know the reasons why.

Urgh. I hate this effect too. I can understand wanting to differentiate between links + making them stand out, but getting them one size bigger looks horrible!
My 2 Cents (or is that 2.2 Cents including GST?)

I use Opera for Linux.. and that effect is BAD in the worst way

when you go over the link, you can only see like 24% of the lettting due to the text disapearing ; )

i dunno how to describe it, but it sucks

Had to fire up my IE5 and blow of the dust. Netscape doesn't show it. I guess NS saves us from some things.
If you move your mouse over it quickly it can actually make you feel nauseous after a while.

Still looks bad but not as bad as the ncaa one! At least yours doesnt' shift the tables around. More of just a bold text thing which is sortof exceptable and/or livable.

I think this this belongs to the same catagory of <blink>no blinks please</blink>, background music when not using flash, and the scrolling ticker tape text thing. Guess that is one of these trends that we hope don't last too long.

I do think one of the neat effects of this, is where there is no underline on a link until you hover over it and it underlines the text. That looks pretty cool and I think is a much better effect then changing text size etc...

    It seems fine to me.
Its more of an accessibility problem. Some people wouldn't notice the onmouseover colour or underline change.
hence the bolding of text is the most appropriate.

neveertheless, its a user opinion and shouldn't cause too much problem.

    don't know why you're making such a fuss =)
