Does anyone know if FrontPage 98 can work successfully with a local server other than PWS? I'd like to switch to Apache, but I'm afraid FrontPage will refuse to work with it. Your help is appreciated.

(I'm assuming you're talking about FP extensions here)

FrontPage extensions work ok on Linux/Apache machines, but once every so often the extensions get corrupted and they have to be re-installed, and it happens every so often.

Extensions seem to work a *fraction* better on NT/2000, but that's about it.

Um, no, I meant FrontPage 98 itself. If the local server's not running, it refuses to work. I'm wondering if the local server can be something other than PWS. I don't really care about the extentions. I've never used them.

Frontpage should work under any circumstances. Maybe it is a special feature you're trying to use, which requires PWS?

you don't even need PWS to work with frontpage, PWS just allows you to preview the site on your machine.

I beg to differ. I just tried to start FrontPage with PWS turned off, and I recieved the message "There is no server on port 80 at 'mylocalname'." It then gave up and returned me to the list of webs.

I found that to be true, too. You can probably use the editor without the server, but I thought I needed to use FP 2000 for a project and it wouldn't let me set it up because of PWS problems. You can probably do it directly on the web server, but then you won't have a local copy of your site structure.

Yes you can us FP without PWS running but you can't use the Publish or Import functions.
