My parents found out about this stuff, and it really works. I have used it, and next evening my sore didn't hurt.

Go to your local pharmacy- they should sell little tubes of stuff. I believe there's a brand called Zilactin- there are plenty of others out there too. Dry out your mouth, throw some drops of that in there, wait through the biting pain for 10-20 seconds, then feel cool relief. If you did it correctly it should have an almost plasticy cover over the sore for the good part of a day, in which that time it should heal a bit.

If you don't go for the chemicals just drink orange juice. Then again that is my cure for everything...

Seriously, put some honey on it. It works wonders for me.

As for medical stuff, go to your local pharmacy and buy "Kanka". It comes in a smlal vial-type bottle and it should be very cheap. After you apply it on the sore, it puts a waterproof protective layer on the canker and will cure it very quickly. Even your tongue wont be able to get through the protective layer.

It's pretty good entertainment to play with the protective layer with your tongue....ehehehe. Only prob, the taste isnt the best in the world...but I'm sure you wont mind the taste as long as it cures and lessens your pain.

I know how you feel...had acanker a few weeks ago. It lasted only 2 days thanks to honey+kanka

Just put some in a teaspoon and hold it to the sore for a few minutes. It may take longer to heal, but you won't be using any nasty chemicals to do it, which is worth the time it takes.
By the way, that silver stuff also heals sore throats, stomach problems, helps flu, kills bad bacteria, and does a host of things I can't even remember. Take a teaspoon or so every day, and you shouldn't have as many sores. It's tasteless as well.

Another home remedy: take a tea bag and hold it against the sore for a while. It won't make them go away, but it eases the pain.

Brush frequently and try using a mouthwash during the day, i.e. listerine. Cleanses the bacteria around the sore and offers temporary relief...

You know what happens when you bite your cheek and it hurts for a few days afterwards? It's that little bit that's a canker sore. They also come about for no reason sometimes (if you get more than a couple that's a good indicator that you'll get sick in 2-3 days).

Just flush some warm salt water over it. Works like a charm. Gargling with it is good for sore throughts also.

    Another tip to add:
I recently tried with baking soda, cause i didnt have any teabags nor those remedies that they recommended me, and i wouldn't even think of putting some earwax on my mouth XD!!... and i was just desperate... I gargled water+baking soda for about a minute and then the pain started to lessen... after a day or so, the canker sore didn't hurt much... and now, it's 100% relieved

It's not an exact science or anything, but there has been a relationship shown between sores that show up for no reason and subsequent sickness.

    Prevent Them

i used to get canker sores constantly, at least once a month and often multiple sores at once.

then i read somewhere online that the toothpaste i use might be contributing to the outbreaks. a very common ingredient in toothpastes is Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)... apparently this does something (maybe breaks down a protective barrier?) that allows canker sores to form.

it took a lot of looking but i finally found a natural toothpaste without any SLS in it. i've used it for 2 years now and haven't gotten a single sore in 2 years!

the sores run in my family. i got my brother on the toothpaste and he went 8 months without a sore (until he ran out, used a conventional toothpaste, and got a sore almost instantly)... he's back with the natural toothpaste of course.

i don't know if this can help everyone, but it helped me and i couldn't be happier now that i don't have to suffer that agony anymore. hope it helps you!

Over here in the UK we call canker sores "ulcers"... or have I misunderstood?!

jac and marco: yep... canker sores also go by those names... it is a type of herpes, but it's not the type that's contagious...

hupes: btw, do you know if a "herbal" type toothpaste might help? (im talking about the herbal colgate toothpaste...)

    Thanks
