When I logon to MySQL server on my machine, it doesn't require a password for root when logging in over the internet. If you give it the password, it won't logon. If you login while sitting at the computer, it does require a password.

    I'm using MySQL on Win98.

    What's the deal?

    Thanks

Look in the user table of the mysql database. Look for an entry root if the Host field is set to % and the password is blank that means that no password is needed from outside the localhost, I would be willing to bet you have tow root users one with localhost in the Host field and a password in the password field. Either take the password out of the localhost entry or add a password to the % entry for root
