Would you sign up - why or why not?

    Hey,
I'm looking to improve my Barren North adventure travel at www.BarrenNorth.com. I thought some of you could provide me with advice: if you had a question about adventure travel or wanted to share some pictures with other adventurers, would you sign up or post on the Barren North? Why or why not?

I'm trying to get people to stay and sign up. Out of the 1,000 uniques a month I get on average, one person signs up - and 1/5 of those posts, at the most. The rest are all 'advertising signups' for people wanting to promote their carpentry and jewerly sites

    Thanks.

To me, it was not obvious that it was a forum for discussion. I'd recommend making the forums more prominent, maybe even having them be the page that loads when you visit the url. The background image is also distracting, and I think that it takes away from the rest of the page.

I would not sign up. While I have an interest in visiting the "Barren North" on vacation, I really have no interest in discussing that with others simply for the fact of discussing my trip.

Maybe no one is interested in the discussions?

Maybe. And maybe not many know that your site is for discussions, as pointed above.

A few might be, if you can get visitors that are actually interested.

I've taken these suggestions into play and have designed the forum and main page more around finding information rather than taking your time to post it. Thanks alot for the help.

One thing, though: any ideas on how to better integrate the forum with the main site? Thanks.

    Hi

I have the same problem. Just over 50 members and it has been in place for 2 years. One or two questions from the members about WHO can post. So I also have managed to be unnecessarily subtle.

But maybe Wayne Luke had the key - not his current post but what SP used to have. A couple of years ago, Wayne worked tiirelessly to make the SP forums the popular, and very informative destination it is.

On the front page of the sitepoint.com there was a "ten most current forum discussions". The forum was vBulletin and the storage of the posts was in mysql. So it was easy to do a select in some php code and work it as an include onto the front. I had a similar item on my site for a short time. I may try it again.
I don't know about talking about my vacations.

It's more to ask questions now: best gear, best places to go... etc.

I think he means get in there and ask and answer questions... Feed it.

There was a point when this forum was first getting started where I had over 1 out of 6 posts on the site. Sometimes you need to be intensive in your application of posts to get a site going. I wasn't the only one posting here in the beginning but I felt having every question answered helped.

I'll feed my hungry content shark then by posting adventure news, etc

    Thanks, Luke and everyone else.

I would sign up - I am big on traveling, espcially outdoors stuff. As a geek the site doesn't appeal to me, but as your average home user looking for travel stuff it does.
