on the echoweb site for their newsletter it says "Note: Your address will not be sold or given away to any third parties."
doesn't this mean that sitepoint cant use the addresses they bought from echoweb?

hmm..that makes sense..
if i remember correctly, they are merging the email addresses from the 2 databases.
so doens't that also compromise the privacy of those users?

SitePoint hasn't just bought email addresses, they have bought the whole lot, as in the whol company which means they have also purchased all assets of it - including email addresses (Which technically means they haven't violated that statement).

Hmm..Maybe I don't understand all the sbuying and selling aspect of it all.
But If i were an end-user, i would be furious.
For the fatc that the statement, as quoted from jumpthru, it says 'not be sold'!
the fact that echoweb sold everything to sitepoint doens't mean anything. echoweb did get money for it right? so its sold.
the integration of the newlsetters also mena that sitpeoint will have a larger subscirber base, which in turn leads to high revenues. as such, they are benefiting from this.
so if my view, your staement holds no meaning for the users.
*just my point*

Echoweb users will become part of our newsletters, yes. We acquired the EchoMedia Inc. media properties, so the rights and permissions to these subscribers are passed to SitePoint in the process.
Subscribers of course can unsubscribe from SitePoint newsletters at any time.

As I see it, they are not giving away email addresses to a third-party. When SitePoint aquired echoweb, they became echoweb as well.
That is why most big companies buy Internet companies... for their customers. I am sure it says in most company's privacy policies, that they will not sell or give away that information to 3rd parties. When someone purchases them, they no longer become a 3rd party.
A lot of huge mergers would have never taken place if they didn't aquire the customers as well!
Just my thoughts...
Doug

Hmm..Ah..I get it guys
Thanks
