    I noticed on some websites that when I hovered over a link it showed a pop-up box similar to the "alt=" in image files.

    Looking at the source code reveiled a "title=" tag in the links, ie:
    Code:
    <a href="blabla.html" title="This page opens in a new window." target="_blank">
    Is this tag valid HTML 4.0 and/or also available in NS(4.7,6.0), or is it special to only IE(5.0)?

    As specified in the HTMl 4.01 specification:

    The title attribute may be set for both A and LINK to add information about the nature of a link. This information may be spoken by a user agent, rendered as a tool tip, cause a change in cursor image, etc.

    Thus, we may augment a previous example by supplying a title for each link:

    <BODY>
    ...some text...
    <P>You'll find a lot more in <A href="chapter2.html"
    title="Go to chapter two">chapter two</A>.
    <A href="./chapter2.html"
    title="Get chapter two.">chapter two</A>.
    See also this <A href="../images/forest.gif"
    title="GIF image of enchanted forest">map of
    the enchanted forest.</A>
    </BODY>

    The title="" tag is supported on Mozilla Builds/Netscape 6 and Internet Explorer

    Since it degrades very well, ( notthing shows ) whats the harm in adding more information tgas to your links for IE and NS6/Mozilla?
