I was wondering if these user variables in the META tag can be removed without making any difference to the web page. I am using FrontPage 2000 and the values of the variables are automatically "Microsoft FrontPage 4.0" and "FrontPage.Editor.Document". Thanks a lot!

By all means. Microsoft Garbage. All meta tags are completely optional.

I thought they were completely optional too, but when I removed the META tag user variable "Microsoft Border", all of my shared borders disappeared.

... And if you're scrimping on file size cutting out the optional tags help to reduce the size of your page (every byte helps )

Errrrrrrr.... That (the thing you removed) sounds like a Microsoft-specific thing which requires FrontPage Extensions. Test the page out by removing the tags one at a time, and if you really need it, keep it. If not, then scrap it.
My 2 Cents (or is that 2.2 Cents including GST?)

    Yes.
    You can remove it.
[ I know its anonying....well.at least to me]

    Here goes.
    Open FrontPage 2000,
Go to: TOOLS >> PAGE OPTIONS >> HTML SOURCE

    Under General,
    Select 'Preserve existing HTML'

From now onwards, it won't add those meta tags.
However, as you might have observed,
FrontPage will no longer format your HTML Code. (according to the rules you set)

Thats alright for me. Afterall, you get greater flexibility and control over your code!
