Hi, I'm currently working with a client to develop a fairly large ecommerce site, and was wondering whether anyone who had done something like this before had any recommendations as to a good shopping cart to use.
The shopping cart should have a search function and allow the user to search by item number.

Also, the cart should have an admin interface where the client can easily add/edit product descriptions. Of course, it will need to be customizable and have all the usual good features. If anyone that has developed a large ecommerce site before knows of such a cart, please let me know. Thanks a lot!

    Hi Brian,

I've set up 4 stores using Miva Merchant. You can see their stuff at www.miva.com. You can also see one of my stores at http://www.foggywindowsbooks.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv

You get a free license to use the software (retails for $495) if you host your site with a company that offers the license. There are many host companies that do. I use OLM.net. The cost usually range from $29.95/month to $49.95 per month depending on what other extra (besides Merchant) you want on your site. The software comes with an admin interface so yes your client could go in and make changes/add products etc easily. There is a very active user group where newbies can get help. There are also many optional modules available from 3rd party companies to add even more functionality to your site. You can join the Merchant users group (go to the Miva site, go to support and sign up to join the group). Many people do just that and ask lots of questions before deciding if that software will work for them.

I had never set up an e-commerce site before and was able to do so fairly easily.

    Hope that helps!
