    Please review - www.sblum.net

http://www.sblum.net is my personal site. Feel free to listen/read/review the content of the site (blog, poetry, music). I'm also looking for critiques on layout, presentation, navigation, etc. Anything good/bad you see, please let me know. Also, any suggestions on content are much appreciated. Thanks!

p.s. The forums on the site contains a fairly large - and fairly rambunctious - online community. There may be offensive/nsfw images to be found.

Kicking things off. You've got a lot of content, which is always good. Your site looks very monotone, It's hard to pick up what the site is about just from a visual standpoint. Seems like a little tweaking to the css and colors for things would pick things up.

I would agreee about the colors, I tried changing them with the panel on the right and the colors change, but I think all the choices would benefit from more contrast.

Yup, the only contast at the moment is between the whole site and the w3c buttons on the right

Your main menu looks different in Opera, Firefox and IE. In opera i get 10px gaps between each link and in Firefox thw whole thing gets shifted to the right by about 35px.

I am a big fan of simplicity but the use of only one colour makes it boring.

    Good luck

It's a good site, good work on the Validator side of things.

Maybe a good logo would give the site some identity!

So, general consensus is... More contrast. I'll see if I can come up with some color schemes that are more contrastual (word? haha). Thanks, everyone, for the input.

Very blue, perhaps intergrating another color? I also would sty away from 2 pixel border, 1 pixel is much cleaner looking.

I like the layout, but I dont like the monotonis of the blue.
Another thing that Im not a big fan of is the mouseover, when the link changes fonts.

    1024x768 , WinXP pro Sp1, 56kb/s, IE6.0 Opera7.23.

Agree with everything above, but I'll try to complete or add somth:

    The up's:

    Fast speed of loading.
A lot of good arranged content.
    Easy navigation.

    The down's:

Not clear at first sight what about is the site.
    No graphics, images, header.
Wrong displaying in Opera. (although it's not serious )
No Meta tags on description and keywords.

    Best Regards.

I'm just going to reiterate what everyone else has been saying... the monotone cyan/blue and black is just too boring (and I hate cyan with a passion). The simplicity is good and the layout is good too. It's easy to navigate around and the text is not too small (as most blog sites tend to be).

I'd work on some colour schemes and maybe a logo. Try incoporating a couple of images or photos to brighten the whole appearance up.

    Otherwise, good work!

Well, once again, I appreciate all the responses. I thought meta tags on description and keywords were a thing of the past? Don't most search engines ignore them?

I already do have a whole bunch of alternate styles that work quite well, if you don't like the blue. You can access them on the right, and some of them do offer much more contrast than the "monotonous" cyan

When I tried the style switcher, it took me to a blank page. Then when I hit back, the page had switched styles.

You might check out www.csszengarden.com to see how their style switcher works.

    Thumbs up Review of sblum.net

    Hi,

Here are some views on your site.

The site has rich content organised very well. The navigation is very good. Another good thing is that the site pages load very fast. These things make it very user freindly.

However, the color you have used on the site seems to be a little dull for a personal site. You can make it more lively. Maybe, changing the font might also greatly improve the look and feel of the site. The 'aim' link in the Contact section on the homepage is not working. Also i did not understand why did u put horizontal black lines on the home page.

These are only some suggestions, see if they are of any help to you.
But i have to say that it is a good attempt at creating a personal site.

    Cheers,
    Charu

Charu - your comments are very much appreciated. The AIM link only works if you have AOL Instant Messenger open. Do you think I should eliminate the link and have a seperate page of contact information with my email address and various IM client screen names?

And as per <b>everyone's</b> request, I'm currently working on a more lively default color scheme.

At least in last Dreamweaver they are included, so i'd say it's rather an other web-myth.

I would try and get away from just using one colour, perhaps you could incorporate some orange into it.

One thing I would also point out, there are very few images in it. So it looks just like err, nothing

    regards,

in the photo album section the page loads with 4 (i think) links but when you go to hover over them it collapses and only the first link is shown, also the main navigational menu is not aligned,

I actually really like the simplistic approach with personal sites these days. Remember the days of animated gifs and rainbow dividers?? Less is more sometimes.

However, I do feel that ou could use a little more color (or lack of color) in the design. Throw some complimentary colors or some white/black in to add a little contrast. As it is now it just looks like a duotone site w/ 2 shades of the same color...

Also, you've got a centered layout on the "Music" page but most other pages are left-aligned... might want to choose one format and stick with it across the board...

    Otherwise, nicely done.

Once again, thanks for the comments, guys. I know there's several issues with browser compliancy, and that's my next major project to tackle . Anyone have any links to color resources? I've been fooling around trying to come up with something and it seems I have a terrible brain for it, lol.

Does the layout really look like one of those prefabricated dealies like Movable Type or phpmyadmin? I hate all those cookie cutter sites and don't want people to think of that at all when viewing mine.

    Thanks again!

It doesn't . It uses a pretty simple database driven CMS (that I didn't create), but the layout was created 100% from scratch by me.
