    I'm not sure if I quite understand the qestion - the two languages are not competitors for the most part.

    JavaScript is used on the client side and is handy for things like form validation and instant user interaction. PHP, on the other hand, simply cannot perform some of the "tricks" JavaScript can, but has much more power overall.

    An example of a more accurate question would be "What are the different advantages/disadvantages of PHP as opposed to ASP?"

    You should use both. =)
    I would take these 2 as the leaders of their competitors anyway.

    Both are good at doing different things. They don't do the same things and functions and thus aren't competitors.

    Well actually, java script and php are very simular if you look at it from a different point of view. There are two kinds of java scripts. Server Side Java Script and Client Side Java Script. PHP allows for you to add dynamic content, and server comands. Well ssjs allows for the same thing. But the difference between ssjs and csjs is that ssjs is compiled. And placed within a directory within your server. And you can only use Livewire to build your ssjs and be hosted on a netscape server.

    Sooooo

    I just wanted to talk. ..

    SSJS = Server-Side JavaScript.

    Yes, technically they can both be used on the server-side of things, but JavaScript is obvoiusly *overwhelmingly* used for client-side tasks, such as popup windows and form validation.

    Overall I wouldn't really consider them competitors in this context.
