    subdomain on different server?

Is it possible to host a subdomain on a different server to the main domain?

The amin site is asp based on IIS and I am trying to develop a section of a site which I'd much rather do in PHP/MySQL. Thus I want the subdomain on a different server. So www.mysite.com lives on the IIS server but www.clients.mysite.com lives on an Apache server with PHP/MySQL.

    Is this possible?

Yea, when you setup the subdomain you just tell it where to look to find the page for it.

IE, http://www.example.com is in your home directory whereas http://client1.example.com is hosted on www.freewebhost.com/~client1/

You just create a forwarder - its easier than messing with DNS.

What is a forwarder? What technology do I use to create one?

Whomever you registered your domain with will give you an "administration" panel within which you can setup subdomains which forward to a particular existing site.

And the URL will be that of the forwarded site?

If so, is there a way to keep the URL as the subdomain address rather than the forwarded site's address?

Yes, its called URL Cloaking ... so instead of http://client1.example.com showing up as http://www.myfreewebhost/~sparkie2/site/index.html it will show up as http://client.example.com/index.html

Hope this is what your after
