I know a lot of folks here rely heavily on paid listings in GoTo.com. But I ran across an article which I think you will find very interesting.

According to the article she paid approx $1,642.50 to google for her ad terms.
She had approx 2482 click throughs from that.
So she paid approx 58 cents per clickthrough.
Obviously you get what you pay for. But it doesn't mean google is better than goto, you can't advertise on google for 1 cent per clickthrough.
