    Link-leeching protection, odd problem??

I have some zip files stored on my site and use a htaccess file to prevent other sites from linking to them ... it looks like this and is in its own /files folder separate from the other files for the site:

    IndexIgnore *
    RewriteEngine on
    RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://(www\.)?*$ [NC]
    RewriteRule \.(zip|exe)$ [R,L]
It seems to work fine on every web browser and computer I've ever tried it on. However I get 1 or 2 emails a week from people saying they're getting the "unauth" page even though they're clicking normally from the site download page. I thought it could be something to do with their web browser or something but whenever I've asked they've always been using a recent version of IE ... So is it something to do with the {HTTP_REFERER} field, if they are not sending a referer it won't let them dl maybe??? I dunno I don't know much about htaccess so I'm just guessing here

So, hints on whats the problem here? Can this be improved in some way to make it work for everyone? THANKS ALL

Yup it has to do with the refferer, with refferer-blocking on I get the unauth page.
Refferer blocking comes with programs like Norton Internet Security, that's the one I use but I'm sure there are others.
