Not a bad article, however it does venture into a little *too* much detail for what is for most people, a fairly easy job. However armed with this article, I don't think anyone could get it wrong

1. Got to have plenty of imagination to sort out the 5 steps.
2. Would be great to go beyond those obvious basics and tell the readers how to integrate it into the design of the rest of the site. It's pretty cool to have phpBB2 integrated into the main navigation of the site, and lets say, a right or left column of the site.

The article seemed fine. I think details are very good.

The one thing I would change though is the title. I thought I was going to program a phpBB like forum.

Should be "Install phpBB in 5 Steps" or something like that.

I'm sure there are lots of people (like me) who don't know about the phpbb website and happen to stumble upon the information here. I found the article very useful because now I know where to go, what to do and what to expect out of the phpbb installation experience.

I agree with the missdiva's post (two posts above this one). I may have never known about this if I had not stumbled upon this article here. And he is right. It takes about 5 minutes to set the whole thing up. Awesome.

What if you have a site that also is going to include a phpBB forum. also, you want the user to be logged in to take part in the forum as well as other pages outside of the forum.

How can you use the username/password information generated by phpBB on other parts of your website like a "comments" page?

If you do a search on the forums this has been discussed many many times over. I think there might also be a hack over at phpBBHacks for this

I still cant do it. I am stuck at ..domain/phpBB2/install/install.php

where i am asked to enter database name etc..
I know no database so i cant see the problem myself.
I am asked admin username and password. I dont know what they should be. Am I supposed to create one?
Or should I enter host username and pw. In any case I
get an error. Best error I get is "passwords don't match".

first you should check with your provider whether your domain subscription offers mysql access at all.
If so, your provider will give you all access data, i.e. database name, user name and password.

phpBB is renound for how simple it is to install, and this reputation is well deserved. If you cannot install phpBB on your own or perhaps with some basic help (eg this article), you are clearly not experienced enough to be running a forum, and should probably get a proboard or some other remotely hosted, simpler package. It is likely that if you are unable to install phpBB, you won't to be able to customize and/or maintain your forum successfully.
