Color question

Hi,
Wondering what is this other class of colors that look like these:

#1A203C, #3F4F5F

I'm used to the browser-safe colors that are combinations of O 6 C and F like: #FF6666 or #3333CC

Can someone help me understand the differences and advantages of each.

Am interested in cross-browser and cross-platform conformity.

Can you give examples of sites that use these codes? I am like you and am use to the #00FF00 codes.

#1A203C is a very, very dark hue of navy bordering on black.

#3F4F5F is a very charcoal-like hue of grey.

If you like I can take some screen snaps and post them to give you an idea if you like.

Colors don't have much to do with cross-platforms - it depends on the visitor's monitor resolution, color depth and video card settings, as well as the monitor brightness and contrast, so a color like #1A203C may look perfect (i.e. the very dark navy) on my 15-inch monitor, but it may just look like black on your monitor.

With regards to the 216-color palette + advantages/disadvantages, you may be interested to read WebMonkey's article on the 'death?' of the 216-color palette. It's a bit long but covers everything you need to know.
