Creating an online web community...

Hello people, it's Deesse again
I was wondering if anybody could give me some pointers on online communities.
I'd like to create my own someday soon but right now, I just need to use an already made up one...
Like the MSN groups or yahoo group type of thing.
I don't wanna use Yahoo, cuz you can't change the design of the page. And MSN causes way too much trouble to load pix. So if you have any other ideas... I'm listening.
