    Image Replacement + accessibility

    Ok, so I am trying some image replacement methods. So far it has worked good by setting the text index to -100em. This shows the images, allows the images to be links, and if styles are turned off, it shows the links, all set inside unordered lists. BUT, of course there is a butt, if images are turned off, the text is still set to -100em.

    Is there any foolproof way to get around this.
    Thanks
    Bryan

    there is a foolproof way...use style switching (not just the javascript powered one, but a server-side one as well) and offer two sheets: one with image replacement, one without.

    or...just use image tags with appropriate ALT. using image replacement is only useful when you want to switch images on the fly etc...for most other cases, the humble img tag is still king...(and you can have it wrapped as proper headings as well, like below)
    Code:
    <h2><img src="blah.jpg" width="100" height="100" alt="Section Header" /></h2>
    re·dux (adj.): brought back; returned. used postpositively
    [latin : re-, re- + dux, leader; see duke.]

    Well, something I don't understand. I am using the latest Firebird and when I disable images with the latest developers extension, all the images get removed and they show NO alt text. Why would that be?

    I know the percentage of users that are browsing with stylesheets on and images off are low, but when I try it, I get blank space, nothing.

    Are you talking about the Web Developer toolbar? If so, use the "Replace images with alt tags" option instead of "Hide images".

    what is the key difference. I mean, if you are going to hide images, whats the point of hiding the alt text to?

    I can't get the extension right now, the server is down

    The difference is that when images are disabled (not just hidden), the alt text will show up. Enable images again and write a broken image link, like so:
    HTML Code:
    <img src="http://vinniegarcia.com/images/thisisnotreal.gif" alt="Fake image" />
    In Firebird, you should see the phrase "Fake image" show up where the image would be, since no such image is on my server.
